This Comedy Should be Free Open Mic at The Triangle Inn

Posted on

After a false start with the open mic at the Silver Spur a few months ago, a dedicated comedy open mic has arisen and begins 2nd and 4th Mondays starting July11th.

1st and 3rd Mondays will still be Un-Manic Mondays Open Mic hosted by Yellow Lights and Jakebus and stand-up is encouraged and still welcome there though musical and poetry acts also perform there.

With the name I’m sure you can tell if you follow Salem comedy that this open mic is ran by Jesse Priest who’s “Comedy is Free” show runs 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at the Triangle Inn. The “This Comedy Should be Free” Open Mic signups start at 8 and the show starts at 8:30 and runs till everyone is done. There are no time or content limits, all that is asked is that respect is given to performers and audience. It’s free and takes place at a bar so 21+ please.

April Fools Comedy Show at Clockworks Cafe!

So a one off show is taking place on April 1st at the Clockworks Cafe. I’ve never really been to a show there so there isn’t much to say about the venue besides that it’s a non-profit and it’s pretty nice inside. OH! It’s got the standard coffee, smoothies and pastries. Only they are way yummy! I also went on my worst date ever there. Maybe I’ll talk about it onstage.

Confirmed acts are Jesse Priest(me!) and E-Rocca. There is a rumor that Jen Allen (who recently played at Comedy is Free) will be there as well. By rumor I mean I saw something on facebook that led me to believe that but I dunno.

There is talk of future shows at this venue if things go well so do try and come out to support Salem comedy. (and non-profit coffee shops with free and/or cheap classes on all sorts of cool and empowering stuff)

So, if you aren’t doing anything this Friday April fools evening, being broke is not an excuse as this show is free, it starts at 8 and shall be all kinds of fun. See you there.

Finally! Salem gets it’s very own open mic!

Have you ever dreamed of being a stand-up comedian but had no idea where to start? It all starts with an open mic where you test your jokes out. Salem has been devoid of a comedy open mic with comics resorting to driving to Portland where there are at least 10 comedy specific open mics. But no longer!

It’s going to be at the Silver Spur on first and third Wednesdays directly after a booked comedy show. The Silver Spur is at 1821 Silverton Rd NE Salem, OR 97303. Comedy show at 9, open mic directly afterward. Of course these are all free + $1 PBRs and super cheap food specials.

In case you didn’t know, comedy is blowing up in Salem and Portland and Eugene. In tough economic times, booze and laughs go hand in hand. There are 6 shows in Salem in the month of April, this is unprecedented. Salem already has about 7 comics who work and get paid doing comedy.

Nervous? Inexperienced? 3 things I can recommend.

1. Find a comedy buddy, maybe someone who will write some jokes for/with you or even try their hand at comedy too. That’s what I did and it helps. Also, make sure your friends come watch, they already think you are funny and will laugh, when you are on stage getting laughs, it’s the greatest feeling ever.

2. There is an open mic at the Triangle Inn on Monday nights that isn’t comedy specific, but allows comedy. The crowd and hosts are really supportive and the risk of humiliation is slim to none. A great place to first try your hand. I also did this and it really helped. The Triangle is at 3215 Liberty Road South and the mic starts at 9.

3. The final thing I can suggest is take in as much stand-up as possible. Watch comedy central presents and the John Oliver New York Stand-Up Show.

The first open mic is April 6th at the Silver Spur, see you all there!

The Coffe House May Be Closing, But the Young Funny Show Lives On!

Salem’s longest running comedy show is the Young Funny Show, started and mostly hosted by Ron Funches(recently, there have been a few guest hosts, as Ron Funches has been getting a bit of work), The Young Funny show was a staple at the Coffee House Cafe.

With the Coffee House closing down or being sold, the future of the show was in Jeopardy, but fear not comedy fans, the Young Funny Show lives on! It’s now being hosted by Salem’s own Jason Cramer thus helping keep 3 running shows in Salem. It’s now going to be at Cafe Noir on April 7th and a formal announcement will be forthcoming on this blog as soon as the lineup is announced.

Come on out and support local comedy!

Comedy is Free 3/22/11

The second installment of Salem’s third longest running comedy show is rapidly approaching. The promoter has bought a brand new sound system and Grace Sadie is bringing a carload of comics from Portland down. To top off all of this, Salem’s own Ron Funches is headlining the event. I just watched him headline at the Silver Spur and absolutely kill.

This is an amazing free show. Come out and have the most fun you can have on a Tuesday night for free.

50cent Tacos too. Oh, and Jesse Priest(that’s me) is hosting.

Welcome!

Hey, this will be an awesome blog covering Salem Oregon’s comedy scene. It’s on fire after a slow burn started by a few key individuals and soon will be a full scale community. Check back here frequently to see our scene grow.
